About US

Since its establishment in Shanghai in 2016, Xitao Design Studio's practice has ranged from a single chandelier to a neighborhood, from very small urban residential interiors to the renovation of old rural houses, from small street stores to youth communities. In addition to our practice, we also focus on the renewal of old buildings and the clustering of objects in living spaces. Our work is not limited by typology or scale, and we try to reveal the possibilities of each site by reconstructing the exploration and understanding of typology through investigation and analysis, paying attention to scale, intimacy, structure, harmony of heavy and light, past and present elements. Our design approach is half-architectural and half-indoor, retreating into the interior and allowing the space to grow from within and break through the boundaries between inside and outside, connecting the often overlooked gaps between architecture and interior. Our interest lies in transforming direct and everyday indigenous materials and construction methods into a deep expression of craftsmanship and detail; creating a subtle and appropriate sense of overall scale with simple and basic forms, clear proportions and unexpected changes in profile; and incorporating a carefully created spatial order to accommodate the changing and growing relationships between objects and people, light and time. Design for us is a precise measurement of the face of the world presented to us, trying to recover the clues of beauty in the everyday, discovering the values hidden under the simplicity, allowing life to unfold its full complexity to us in its simplicity.

自2016年成立于上海，西涛设计工作室的实践涉猎从一只吊灯到一个街区、从城市极小住宅室内到乡村老屋改造、从街头小店到青年社区等多种范畴的设计。实践之外，同时专注于旧建筑更新和居住空间的物体聚落等研究课题。 我们的工作并不受类型与规模的限制，通过调查分析去重建对类型的探索和理解，在过程中关注尺度、亲密感、构造、重与轻、过去与即刻的元素协调，从而尝试去揭示每个场地的可能性。 我们的设计方法是半建筑半室内的，退隐到内部，让空间自里面生长并突破内外的边界，连接起常被忽视的建筑与室内的缝隙。我们的兴趣在于将直接而日常的本土材料和建造手法转化为对工艺和细节的深度表达；用简单和基本的形式、清晰的比例和意外的剖面变化，创造出细腻适宜的整体尺度感；结合悉心营造的空间秩序，去容纳物体和人、光线和时间之间变化生长的关系。 设计对我们而言是对世界向我们所呈现面目的精确丈量，试图去重拾日常之中美的线索，发现隐藏在朴素之下的价值，容许生活于简单中向我们展开其全部的复杂性。
