The neutrality becomes a tool to give new life to the RaymatCastle in Lleida, Spain. With the use of simple and typicalmaterials of our times, the first phase ofthis12th-century property renovation has beencompleted to turn it into a place to host events as well asa retreatfor its owners.
In order to improve the narrative of the place and make it alively and contemporary location, the new design focuses ontransforming the different outdoor areas into easy-to-readand multi-purpose spaces. On the one hand, and takingadvantage of a plain at the castle’s foot, a new terracearea has been layout in ipe wood and formwork concrete thatsurrounds an old raft remodeled.
This great viewpoint is partially flown thanks to animportant structural exercise on the property’s perimeterwall. To contrast with the masonry of the castle, a metalrailing runs throughout the new intervention, finallytransforming into a minimalist pergola prepared to receivevegetation
Secondly, almost at the foot of the hill, external concretestands have been built to allow visitors to enjoy outdoorevents. At the same time, a staircase has been designedconnecting the two levels of the plot. Executed inblack-dyed steel sheet with the particularity of a metallicgrating footprint as a solution for the evacuation of waterin case of rain.
Aesthetically it connects with an old warehouse that has nowbeen turned into the conference and meeting room for RaimatLAB, the innovation and sustainability platform linked tothe family foundation. The glass façade is framed anddivided into large black steel slats while two doors made ofburned pine wood using the Japanese Yakisugi technique areadded at its ends. The views created from the inside speakabout a very serene atmosphere, as if admiring a landscape painting.
