Competition for Finland's Museum of History and the Future picks winning design

The international competition to design the ambitious new Museum of History and the Future in Turku, Finland, recently selected the proposal "Squāma" by Finnish practice Sigge Architects Ltd as the winning entry.

The firm, which merged with Helsinki's Sarc Architects earlier this year to form the new Sarc + Sigge venture, beat out 400 submissions for the chance to design the museum. Their winning scheme will serve as a catalyst for the revitalization of the 150,000-square-foot site on the banks of the Aura River.

Pekka Mäki, the project lead for Sarc + Sigge, commented: "It is a great joy and honor to win an international architectural competition in my hometown. The aim was to create a museum building that fits in scale and architecture with Turku Castle. The spaces are placed on one level, making the museum building and its surroundings function as a seamless whole."

Construction is expected to start in 2027 and be completed by 2029 before opening to the public in 2030.
