Shenzhen, Nanshan Government announced MVRDV together withZhubo Architecture Design have won the architecturalcompetition for the Xili Sports and Cultural Centre, aproject seeking to transform the lives of the differentgenerations of people living nearby, through offering a morehumanistic model for sports and culture. The project willbring together a wide range of activities in this newexperience centre with four distinct volumes and a totalsurface area of 105,000m2 including a theatre, a basketballand badminton arena, a multifunctional arena and a swimmingpool, set to become ‘the’ social and well-being focal pointof Shenzhen’s Dasha Green corridor.
China’s first special economic zone Shenzhen is more and morefine-tuning its urban area. Located in a residential areaalong the Dasha Green Corridor, which stretches from theNanshan mountain park to the Yangtai mountain park, thesoon-to-be realised Xili Sports and Cultural Centre, is anexperience centre for sports, well-being, leisure andculture that seeks to achieve profound connections betweennature, sports and culture, thus serving wide-ranging agegroups and interests.Shenzhen is the fastestdeveloping urban region in China, transforming fromproduction to a more knowledge driven economy. These newsports centres fit into these developments focusing on abetter quality of life. The City’s boom as an economicpowerhouse has given rise to high-density usage, withstadium-sized sports arenas to match. There is now a needfor a more human-centred approach, the challenge was to gofrom bigness to compression through understanding urbanism.
MVRDV’s design for the densification and development of asports and cultural centre responds to the growing demandfor fitness sports venues, with the intention of introducinga more fun, human, social and sustainable model that departsfrom populist Olympic-sized sports arenas. Exercise is stillthe main function here, but interaction within singularspaces gives way for more open zones, where different sportsand social activities can occur. The centre is an urbaninterface that allows for flexible use during different timeframes, cross boundaries between sports and culture, whilststrengthening the community by encouraging locals andvisitors to interact in these multifunctional spaces.
“There are many ofthese types of buildings being built in Shenzhenin a short time, which is an amazing phenomenonin itself, so the idea was to make a collectionof atmospheres in this centre so that they canbe distinguished from each other.” Says MVRDVfounding partner Jacob van Rijs. “We wanted tocombine a large-scale sports stadium with asocial aspect connecting it with the community. This was achieved by arranging different volumeson the site around a new diagonal (green) bridgelinking the Chaguang metro station in the south, with the Tanglan mountains in the north, makingthis centre a stage for different users –nature, sports and culture.
The 105,000m2 centre consists of a 20,000m2theatre-amphitheatre, 15,000m2 Basketball-Badminton arena,10,000m2 multifunctional arena and 6,000m2 swimming pool, presenting a dynamic public space with multiple layers.During the day, on the evenings or at weekends, differentgroups of people with different needs, can also serve as aguideline for programming of the collective spaces.
A special elevated running track is the signature element ofthe complex as it connects, weaves in and out of allvolumes. It also invites people to go for an exciting runaround the complex, relax and socialise both inside andoutside.
The four main buildings all have simple volumes, with arecognisable identity forming a family of differentcharacters, and each building has an activated roof open toall users suitable for all seasons. The theatre, locatedinside of an open ball-like volume with space in-between thefunctional theatre serving as a lobby and circulation space.
Its large stepped green roof can be either an amphitheatre oroutdoor cinema. The ‘multifunctional arena’ is a buzzingbeehive of different sports activities. Each level has acertain theme, with the running track looping through andaround the courts. Volleyball, table tennis, a generalsports hall and a small soccer field on top complete thisvolume.
The basketball court is above the main venue where bigmatches will be held. From bottom up, there is a plaza levelwith lobby, and the service levels containing all dressingrooms, next to the main hall. Above this is a secondbasketball venue surrounded by a mezzanine for badminton, fitness spaces, and a sports bar. Finally, the pool buildingis a compact volume lifted up one floor from the plazalevel. Below the pools are service spaces, dressing roomsand the location of the wellness areas.Xili Sports andCultural Centre will be MVRDV’s first project underconstruction in Shenzhen, starting in 2017.Credits
